2013.12.06 - JACO held Symposium 2013“A review of the PIC systematical reform and challenges for the future”

JACO hosted a symposium 2013 "A review of the PIC systematical reform and challenges for the future” on December 5, 2013 and more than 200 CSO leaders, representatives from profit sectors and government agencies attended. We had two keynote lectures by Mr. Tsutomu Hotta, a president of the Sawayaka Welfare Foundation, Ms.Kanae Doi, Japan Director of the Human Rights Watch, and five speakers reviewed PIC systematical reform and new trends of the public interest activities at the panel session.

2013.11.21 - The 4th East Asia Civil Society Forum was held on November 20th

The 4th East Asia Civil Society Forum “Nurture inner resources of civil society and volunteerism among Japan, China and Korea” hosted by JIVRI: Japan International Institute for Volunteering Research, co-hosted by JACO and other 2 organizations was held in Tokyo on November 20th with financial support from Japan International Cooperation Agency: JICA and 130 CSO leaders from China, Korea and Japan were attended. We had a keynote speeches from three countries and discussed about capacity building of NPO/NGO and roles of the Intermediary Support Organizations at the panel session.

2013.11.17 - JACO attended International Civil Society Week 2013 held in Johannesburg, South Africa

JACO staff attended the International Civil Society Week 2013 and participated in the AGNA Annual General Meeting held on November 13th, DEEEP International Conference held on 11th and 12th and CIVICUS Annual Meeting on 12th in Johannesburg, South Africa. JACO also hosted 4th AGNA Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting “How can national associations support social enterprise and CSR-Philanthropic activities” on November 15th at CIVICUS House.
During the AGNA Annual General Meeting, JACO introduced more 30 attendees a results of the survey “Services and tools that national associations provide and its achievement.
On November 15th, JACO visited South African NGO Coalition (SABGOCO) with Oli Henman, a head of international team of the National Council for Voluntary Organizations (NCVO), UK, and exchanged information and experiences with Jummy Gotyana, president and CEO of SANGOCO and other three executives.

2013.11.01 - JACO hosted lecture presentation “Charitable giving by a wealthy class in the US“

Lecture presentation "Charitable giving by a wealthy class in the US " hosted by JACO was held on October 29th, 2013 and more than 40 representatives from public interest corporations and general nonprofit corporations were participated.
Mr. Gary Moriwaki, a lawyer at Fox Rothschild LLP in the US, presented and introduced a current situation of charitable giving by wealthy class, how they provide money for the charitable purpose and the way of operating assets and giving money.

2013.10.10 - JACO sent a delegation to New York and Boston

JACO sent a delegation to New York and Boston from September 30th to October 4th to study on the roles and the latest recent trend of American grant making foundations, how their behaviors changed from traditional grant and so on.
The purpose of our delegation is to research and understand the rapid change of environment surrounding grant making foundations such as a significant drop of income due to continuous economic stagnation, emerging of social enterprises.
The delegations visited Philanthropy New York, The Henry Luce Foundation, American Express Foundation, Ford Foundation, New York Community Trust, Rockefeller Brothers Fund in New York, The Center for Effective Philanthropy, Fish Family Foundation, Health Resources in Action, The Philanthropic Initiative, The Boston Foundation, FSG Inc. in Boston and attended the IS annual conference on September 30th.

2013.06.14 - JACO hosted Lecture presentation "The Role of Grant-making Foundations in the Age of New Frontier of Philanthropy"

Lecture presentation"The Role of Grant-making Foundations in the Age of New Frontier of Philanthropy" hosted by JACO was held on June 14, 2013 and 14 leaders from grant-making foundations are participated.

Mr. Tatsuaki Kobayashi, International Philanthropic Fellow, Johns Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies, presented and introduced venture philanthropy, Catalytic philanthropy, Ecosystem designer and Model of investors.

After his presentation, all the attendees discussed what are the differences of the philanthropic system in Japan and U.S., how we can bring the U.S. system into Japan and so on.

2013.06.03 - The Meeting with USJC was held in Tokyo

The Meeting with the U.S. Japan Council (USJC) hosted by JACO was held in Tokyo on May 30, 2013.
Ms Irene Hirano, president of USJC, and other USJC executives as well as 15 leaders from Japanese grant making foundations and research institutions were participated and discussed about a current situation on the U.S. and Japanese non-profits including changes of grant making foundations' behaviors and decision making process.

2013.04.20 - Established Information Center in the UK

JACO recently opened an information center in the UK, SCVO office, and started the service on April 16th, 2013.
We aim to introduce charitable sector in Japan to the European citizens by providing several resources that we are publishing.

2013.02.04 - First Regional Meeting of Asia Development Alliance (ADA) was held in Bangkok

  The First Regional Meeting of the Asia Development Alliance (ADA) was held under the theme, “Promote Asian Solidarity for the World We Want: Asian Civil Society Organization (CSO) Strategies on Global Development Challenges” from Jan.31st to Feb. 2nd and Mr. Shiraishi attended this meeting as a speaker.
  The meeting was aiming to promote international cooperation and solidarity among national and sub-national CSOs to build a global vision and strategy on processes as the post-2015 development agenda, Post-Busan process on aid effectiveness and related sustainable development processes.
  The agenda was focusing on: sharing of experiences among CSOs on their activities and advocacy work; analysis and reflection on international and regional trends and challenges, with a focus on international processes and meetings; and strategizing and developing and joint action plans.Two parallel sessions were held on: Enabling Environment for CSO Development Effectiveness; and Financing for Development - Beyond the Monterrey Consensus.

2013.01.15 - JACO published a survey report "Services and tools that national associations provide and its achievement"

JACO hosted a side meeting entitled “Roles and Responsibilities of National Associations” during the CIVICUS World Assembly on 7 September 2012. This side event aimed at defining the roles and responsibilities of national associations and at analysing the ways in which umbrella organisations try to protect and expand civil space, support civil society organizations, their activities, and protect the legal environment CSOs operate in. Participants created an evaluation methodology to help national associations assess their internal capacity and their position in comparison to others. 23 umbrella organizations responded to the survey. The results of this survey are consolidated in a report produced by JACO in January 2013 and available here<PDF>.
